Tia Toilolo recently entered the Tutoring Center to request help with an English assignment. She spoke to Rebecca Hendricks at the front desk who pointed Toilolo in the direction of the Writer's Center as there were no drop-in English tutors. Toilolo entered the Writer's Center and explained her assignment, which was to correct a paragraph of run-on sentences.
Clover Park High School is hosting the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life starting on June 4 at 6 a.m. and ending at noon the next day. The Relay for Life is a fundraising event for non-profit, non-governmental cancer research funding in the U.S. Anyone personally affected by cancer is invited to form a relay team and collect sponsors and donations for the American Cancer Society.
A new state cell phone law has students talking. Effective June 10, the new law enhances the existing secondary laws which prohibit texting or talking on a phone without a hands-free device while driving. Prior to the new bill being passed, drivers could not be ticketed for using their mobile device while driving unless they were pulled over for another traffic infraction such as speeding.
At the end of every school year Pierce's students vote for the Outstanding Faculty Award. Students have the opportunity to vote for the faculty member that inspired them the most throughout the year. This year winner is Denise Arnold, social science professor and the SSMH program coordinator.
Pierce College has just created a new online job database, which helps students search for jobs and internship opportunities. Registered users can access approved jobs and internships within the region. The Puget Sound Careers Consortium has formed a partnership with Pierce College and established this system to help students with job search activities.
Students, staff and faculty from both Pierce College campuses are starting a bike team to participate in Wheels to Meals fundraiser to help raise money for St. Leo's Food Connection. The bike team will be riding on June 6 in the 5th Annual Wheels to Meals.
Attending summer school may provide a fast-track for students who want to get ahead in finishing their degrees sooner. During the summer students can choose to take classes either online or in the classroom. But summer school is not all work and no play. "It's the best time to take a walk around the lake, be outside near the campus.
Three Pierce College students designed a time machine to take children's imaginations far away. The time machine is red, has four wheels, a black handle and is full of books and toys. Imagine a Radio Flyer red wagon. The Tree House Time Machine was created by Student Relations Senator Desiree Gulliford, Clubs/Outreach Senator Andrew Phillips, and Derek Woolery.
