Currently, the Activities Board changes the magnetic messages every few weeks.
The school decided that a brand new sign, closer to the road, would be easier to read.
The new plans to create and build the sign estimated the cost to be $120,000.
The money will come from the Services and Activities (S&A) fund balance; the money left over from previous year's budgets. That money is reserved for major purchases. Last year the balance paid for exercise machines in the HEC.
The sign will be 8-feet-tall and display one to three-line messages and but not block vision from the entrance and exit. (See graphic below.)
The policy for how many messages they can run and how long the messages will run has yet to be established. Another reason for the new sign was to show messages of school closures or evacuation warnings. In previous years, when the school had bomb scares, a person had to stand at the road and direct people away.
The college is in the middle of a face lift and they hope the new design will act as a "gateway" to the campus.
"It is an opportunity to update the campus and has been years and years that we've worked on this," Director of Student Programs Walt Sommers said. "It will be a legacy."
