EDITORIAL: Students shouldn't pay for parking, Olympia should
Issue date: 6/4/09 Section: Opinion
Whenever students see another article in the Pioneer about parking, they generally know it's not going to be a happy topic.
However, this latest article brings bad news mainly to professors and faculty members. The latest "bump in the road" is a proposed fee for the faculty at Pierce College that would help repair and revamp the campus parking lots; mainly the North parking lot.
This fee would be at least equal to the amount paid by students. The student fee is also facing a potential raise.
This is simply a ridiculous idea. The professors here at Pierce are giving students a great education. There is no price that can be put on that, and they deserve every penny they earn, if not more.
The rest of the faculty are also responsible for making this school run, and they shouldn't have to be responsible for paying to fix the parking lot and neither should the students.
Obviously, the current status of the parking lot is a problem. So who should pay for it? Here's an idea. Pierce College is a state run institution, so why doesn't Olympia and Gov. Gregoire pay for the fixing of the school parking?
Washington State is the eighth most taxed state in the country. You would think that would mean the state could afford to pump out a little money to fix a serious problem for one of its colleges.
Olympia should put some more tax dollars into great institutions like Pierce College instead of taking funds out of the faculty and students' pockets.
