According to countless tech. sites such as Gametrailers.com, Gizmodo, Kotaku and IGN, winter '09 to winter '10 is going to be one of the biggest years gaming has ever seen.
In no particular order, here are some of the big game titles for this year:
MAG
(PlayStation 3)
Just Released: Jan. 26
From what the developers of MAG (Massive Action Game) have been saying, this game is supposed to be able to handle 256 players on a single map. That many players in a first-person shooter would be a first.
There are a lot of rumors that PlayStation Online (being free) will not be able to physically handle the load, but the makers of MAG assure that game play should be flawless.
Mass Effect 2
(Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows)
Just Released: Jan. 26
Mass Effect 2, much like the first one, features a lot of customization and decision-making. The developers, Bio-Ware, aimed to please a wide range of gamers with this title: from those who enjoy side-stories, conversations and general information to those who love action and combat.
Bioshock 2
(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows)
Release Date: Feb. 9
The sequel to the immensely popular 2007 game, Bioshock, Bioshock 2 takes place 10 years after the first game, in the underwater dystopian city called Rapture.
But don't expect to play as the original protagonist. The lead character for Bioshock 2 is one the first "Big Daddies:" a critically acclaimed monster from the first game. The game will also feature a story-driven multiplayer.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
(Wii)
Release Date: Mid 2010
What more do I have to say than, "another Mario game?" Anytime Nintendo releases a Mario game, whether it is good or bad, it sells well. But Nintendo assures that gamers will be pleased with Super Mario Galaxy 2.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
(Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX)
Release Date: Roughly Nov. 1
The world's biggest Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Play Game (MMORPG) says their loyal minions customers can expect the third expansion this year.
World of Warcraft has more than 11.5 million subscribers, so there are a lot of people waiting for this one.
The game will introduce two new races, an increased level cap to 85 and plenty of other features only WoW players would care about.
Final Fantasy XIII
(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
Release Date: March 9
Anyone who considers themselves a 'gamer' should know of the final fantasy franchise, and FFXIII is the next in the lineup.
But beware: it's supposed to be on three discs for the 360. Square-Enix, the developers of the game, admitted they were forced to compress video and audio to minimize the number of discs. PlayStation 3 owners don't need to worry; the game fits uncompressed on one Blu-ray disc.
Halo Reach
(Xbox 360)
Release Date: End of 2010
This is scheduled to be the last Halo game made by Bungie (the studio that created Halo). Now, that doesn't mean Microsoft will not make anymore Halo games, as Halo Wars was made by a different studio (Ensemble). So I won't say this is the last Halo game.
Anyway, this game is highly anticipated. It is based off the book "Halo: The Fall of Reach." Reach is said by many fans to be the best out of the official books published so far.
Bungie has developed a brand new engine for the game, but promises the same Halo experience thousands of gamers have come to love.
Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
(Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX)
Release Date: First Half of 2010
It's taken almost 12 years, but the sequel to one of the biggest real-time strategy games is finally going to come out. Ever since the announcement made in South Korea in 2007, PC gamers have been keeping tabs on this one.
The game began development well before it was announced. So how Blizzard (the makers of the game) kept it under wraps for so long is still a mystery (probably mind control). But with hundreds of thousands of people still playing a 1990s game, it's going to be big.
God of War III
(PlayStation 3)
Release Date: March 2010
Despite the name, God of War III is the fifth and final installment to the God of War series. During the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards, the game was awarded with the Most Anticipated Game of 2010.
The game is heavily based on Greek mythology, with the main character out for revenge against the gods of Olympus.
