International students prepare to share culture during fair
Issue date: 1/28/10 Section: Campus
Around the world in a week is what Young Chae La, the International Ambassador at Pierce, said he is trying to do.
On Feb. 4 in the cafeteria, Pierce's international students are hosting the International Fair.
"We are going to bring cool and awesome cultures from each country," La said.
This is the third international fair at Pierce, but it's the first one La is organizing.
"I would like to see a lot of students come and share with them all of the different cultures," La said.
The places represented will each have their own table where they can put together different things people might like to see from their home country.
Some of the different regions showing at the fair are South Korea, China, Japan, Africa, Germany, Hong Kong and Turkey.
There are going to be games, costumes, calligraphy, food, pictures, posters, performances and movies.
"Some people may bring their own music, like some Asian instruments, and we can sing and maybe play the piano," La said.
La explained they will take one hour off the IP program so students can participate in the fair's activities. They also talked with the students' instructors so they can get extra credit for participating.
"The international students really want to talk to American people, but they are really shy," La said.
He said he believes this can be a wonderful opportunity for students to socialize and increase social awareness.
