Student Programs to host quarterly blood drive on campus
Issue date: 1/28/10 Section: Campus
The Cascade Regional Blood Services has their quarterly two-day blood drive coming up on Feb. 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
At last quarter's two-day blood drive, there were 56 donors. Those are good numbers, according to Patricia Hernandez, a coordinator at CRBS, but not as good as the Puyallup campus turnout. Puyallup had around 130 donors.
Hernandez stated that the biggest groups of donors are high school and college students.
"We are a nation of 300 million people," Hernandez said. "Out of those 300 million, only about 37 percent have blood usable by hospitals. Out of the 37 percent, only about 5 percent actually donate."
Do the math and it comes out to about 5.5 million people. According to Hernandez, one person's donation can help three individuals.
"It's something quick, easy and simple you can do to benefit your community," Hernandez said. "It saves lives."
The CRBS provides blood to the Franciscan Health System and the MultiCare Health System as well as Madigan Army Hospital.
"Pierce College has always been good to us," Hernandez said. "We've had blood emergency shortages in the past and Pierce has allowed us to park the bus outside and ask students for donations. We really appreciate it."
For more information on the blood drive, go to the Student Programs Office on the fourth floor of the Cascade building.
